Rubens was a remarkable individual, not only because of his enormous success as a painter, but because he was clearly a charming and attractive fellow, described as having 'a tall stature, a stately bearing, with a regular-shaped face, rosy cheeks, chestnut hair, bright eyes but with suppressed passion, a laughing air, gentle and courteous'.
