Description

"Olympus: The Fall of the Giants" is a majestic fresco painted by Francisco Bayeu y Subías between 1764 and 1765. This work was commissioned as part of the decorative program of the Casón del Buen Retiro in Madrid, which was part of the old Palace of Buen Retiro and now belongs to the Museo del Prado. With approximate dimensions of 450 × 600 cm, the fresco covers the ceiling of the room and represents a neoclassical interpretation of the myth of the Gigantomachy, inspired by both classical models and the academic aesthetics of the 18th century. Bayeu, brother-in-law and mentor of Goya, was one of the main painters at the court of Carlos III, and this work reflects the influence of his training in Italy and his mastery of large formats.

One of the most spectacular manifestations of mural art in Enlightenment Spain can be found in this fresco that dramatically depicts the moment when the gods of Olympus defeat the giants, symbols of chaos and cosmic disobedience. The center of the composition is dominated by a celestial glow from which the figure of Jupiter (Zeus) emerges, launching his thunderbolt at the rebels. Surrounding him are other deities in an aerial dance of emphatic and elegant gestures, while the giants, depicted as muscular and fallen figures, plunge from the clouds into darkness.

The technique of foreshortening is masterfully applied: the figures seem to protrude from the ceiling and envelop the viewer in a celestial whirlwind. The colors used are sober yet effective, with touches of sky blue, golds, and pinks that lend lightness to the divine scene, while earthy tones mark the world of the defeated. The spiral composition and the circular arrangement of the characters create an enveloping rhythm that recalls the grand decorations of Italian Baroque, but with the compositional clarity characteristic of Neoclassicism.

This painting is an allegory of the triumph of rational order over uncontrolled forces, very much in line with the ideals of the Enlightenment. Beyond its technical beauty, Bayeu's fresco is also a declaration of principles of royal and divine power as guarantors of universal balance.
