Description

The work presents a still life of striking visual intensity, built around a wooden stringed instrument, several open sheets of music and an ornamental fabric that occupies much of the lower part of the composition. The instrument extends horizontally across the upper section, while the printed sheets overlap in the centre, revealing staves and musical notes. Beneath these objects, the folds of the fabric form a rich, tactile surface covered with geometric, floral and arabesque motifs in reds, oranges, browns and blacks. On the left, small metal objects add occasional glints among the shadows. Everything is gathered against an almost black background, focusing the eye on the illuminated textures.

As a genre, still life arranges everyday objects to make them the focus of a contemplative experience. Here, the combination of the instrument and sheet music evokes a musical world without depicting performers or a narrative scene. The composition thus belongs to the realm of material culture: wood, paper, fabric and metal appear as traces of human activity, brought together in a quiet space. Music is suggested by its written signs and by the instrument placed beside them, so the work transforms a sound-related reference into an experience that is primarily visual and tactile.

The association between the sheet music and the instrument invites a reading of art, memory, and the resonance of cultural practices. The sheets are not merely blank surfaces; their lines and notes introduce rhythm, order, and the promise of sound into a still scene. By contrast, the ornamented fabric adds a richer sensory dimension: its patterns and folds reveal the decorative work and the richness of the materials. Metallic reflections heighten this sense of abundance, while the dark background separates the objects from the outside world and turns them into almost theatrical elements.

Formally, the composition rests on a compact horizontal structure. The instrument’s elongated line guides the eye from one end to the other, while the sheet music interrupts this continuity with diagonals, folds, and bright surfaces. The fabric introduces an irregular counterpoint through folds, edges, and repeated designs, creating a visual rhythm that balances the instrument’s stability. The palette is built around deep blacks and browns, enlivened by accents of red, orange, gold, and cream. Warm lighting shapes the wood and reveals the texture of the fabric, while shadows absorb the contours at the edges. This chiaroscuro draws attention to the material center of the scene and creates an intimate, restrained, and theatrical mood.

In Still Life, Michel Boyer transforms an arrangement of musical and textile objects into a scene of intense physical presence. The power of the work does not depend on action, but on the way each surface retains its own quality: the wood seems warm, the paper light, the fabric thick, and the metal fleetingly bright. It is worth observing how the sheet music connects the instrument’s horizontal form with the fabric’s broken movement; there the tension between order and ornamental richness is concentrated. The result is a visual meditation on music that remains silent, sustained by the weight of the objects, the depth of the shadows, and the precision of the light.
