Description

The painting shows the Holy Family taking a pause during their flight into Egypt, transformed into a pastoral scene of great visual richness. Mary occupies the foreground, seated with the Christ Child in her arms, while a kneeling woman approaches with an attentive gesture and a woven basket. Joseph stands amid the vegetation, his arm outstretched, and another female figure holds a staff beside the trunk of the large central tree. Sheep and lambs gather on the right; white cloths are spread across the ground, and a light-coated animal is partly concealed beside the group. A small winged figure appears among the upper branches, integrated into the interweaving foliage, sky and light.

The episode comes from the Gospel account of Jesus’s childhood. According to the Gospel of Matthew, Joseph leads Mary and the child to Egypt to protect them from Herod’s persecution. The painting does not depict the flight as a scene of urgency, but as a pause along the way: the journey is suggested by the staff, cloths, basket, animals and expanse of landscape. This choice brings the sacred event closer to a recognisable human experience, marked by fatigue, maternal care and the need to find shelter along the way.

The relationship between Mary and the child forms the emotional heart of the composition. The kneeling woman’s gesture extends a line of care and welcome towards them, while Joseph’s presence connects the family group to the surrounding space. The winged figure among the branches introduces a protective, spiritual dimension, as though nature itself frames the episode under an invisible watch. The sheep reinforce the scene’s pastoral character and echo the stillness of the rest. In the background, the vertical monument resembling an obelisk and the stone structure with small figures evoke antiquity and broaden the story into a distant world.

Angelo Caroselli organizes the composition around a series of stepped pyramidal forms. The tree dominates the center, its branches forming a natural canopy that gathers the figures beneath it, while the group of people and animals creates a compact visual axis in the lower part of the painting. Brown, olive-green, and ochre tones build up a dense landscape, set off by the red garments, the blue of Mary’s clothing, and the luminous whites of the fabrics and animals. Light falls on the foreground, clearly modeling the bodies, while allowing the foliage, rocks, and horizon to retain a more shadowy depth. The open gestures and the diagonals of the staff balance the overall stillness and lead the eye from the child toward the distant landscape.

In the arrangement attributed to Angelo Caroselli, the religious narrative takes on an intimate, earthly dimension: the monumental tree and the distant architecture contrast with the proximity of the fabrics, basket, and animals. The work’s strength lies in transforming an episode of travel and danger into an image of pause, intimacy, and protection. The central tree links sky, figures, and earth, while the sheep, rocks, and branches make the rest a scene of continuous passage. The tenderness of the central group is thus integrated into a landscape that makes visible a moment of shelter along the way.
