Description

The painting shows eight nude women gathered in a sunlit meadow, linked by their arms or raising their hands in a group dance. The figures extend from the far left to the right edge, forming an open chain that moves across the surface like a ring in motion. In the foreground, one woman leans forward while another crouches or kneels; in the center and toward the right, several upright and diagonal poses shape the shared gesture. The landscape stretches beneath them in undulating bands of green, yellow, and blue, while a clear sky fills the upper part of the painting and heightens the sense of openness.

The title, Nude Women Dancing in a Ring, places the work within the tradition of pastoral figurative scenes and celebrations of the body. These are not identifiable characters or participants in a specific narrative episode, but rather a collective vision in which the human body is integrated with nature. The nudity is associated with an open space, far removed from any interior or ceremonial setting, turning the meadow into a place of freedom, vitality, and connection. The scene is shaped as a celebration of shared movement, in which each figure takes part in a common rhythm without losing its distinctive pose.

The circular arrangement is the symbolic core of the composition. Although the group forms an open arc, the sequence of arms and bodies creates visual continuity that suggests community, reciprocity, and uninterrupted movement. The leaning figure at the lower left and the crouching woman in the foreground introduce variations within this unity, as if the dance allowed for different tempos and levels of energy. Integrated into the landscape, the nudity reinforces a reading of a primordial connection with nature. The clear sky and sunlit meadow heighten the scene’s festive, expansive character without distracting from the interplay of bodies.

Formally, the work is organized around a diagonal rhythm created by the legs, inclined torsos, and raised arms. The central figures carry the greatest visual tension, while the poses at either end open up the composition and make it extend beyond its boundaries. The horizon is partly obscured by the bodies, so the landscape does not serve as a passive backdrop: its undulating bands echo the curve of the group, turning the terrain into an extension of the movement. Greens, yellows, and blues alternate with the figures’ pink and flesh tones, creating a vibrant contrast. The light brushstrokes in the sky balance the density of the band of figures and preserve an open atmosphere.

In this work, Francisco Iturrino combines his intense palette and free brushwork with a scene of nudes in a landscape, animated by a vital energy. Descriptive detail is subordinated to the overall rhythm: what matters is not to individualize the faces, but to make the flow of bodies, arms, and color visible. The painting transforms a dance into an expansive structure, in which the human arc finds its counterpart in the undulations of the meadow and the luminous sky. As you look at it, follow the path of the linked hands and notice how each pose passes the movement on to the next; in this way, the scene reveals its true center in the collective continuity.
