Description
Raphael’s final work in the Gemäldegalerie dates from his last Florentine period and shows a marked shift from the Madonna Terranuova, painted only a few years earlier: the palette has become much lighter, with the hair even moving from dark blonde to light blonde, the chiaroscuro is somewhat more restrained, and the modelling more delicate. The features are softer and fuller, the gestures less measured, more lively, and more graceful. In a seemingly spontaneous movement, Christ turns his reassuring face toward the viewer.
