Description

The painting shows Cleopatra reclining on a sumptuously ornamented bed, her torso bare, adorned with gold jewelry, and a red and pink fabric spread over her legs. A greenish-brown serpent crosses her arm and descends toward her lap, becoming the visual axis of the scene. In the background, two figures are silhouetted in an architectural opening, like silent witnesses to a private and dramatic event. The green drapery, fringes, tassels, decorative vessels and abundance of fabrics turn the interior into a setting of courtly luxury.

The scene alludes to Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, and the traditional account of her death. According to the most widely circulated account, the queen died from the bite of an asp after her forces were defeated by Octavian. The painting does not present the episode as a detached chronicle, but as a theatrical depiction of royal intimacy: power, sensuality and vulnerability are concentrated in the queen’s body and in the animal resting upon it.

The serpent serves as an attribute of impending doom and a sign of the approaching fate. Its sinuous path links Cleopatra’s hands, arm and lap, turning her bodily gesture into an image of surrender and danger. The jewelry, bed and sumptuous textiles underscore her status and wealth, but also heighten the contrast between the magnificence of her surroundings and the fragility of her situation. The figures in the background expand the episode’s narrative dimension, while the architectural opening creates a silent distance between the private drama and the outside world.

The vertical composition is arranged like a theatrical scene. Green draperies form an upper and side frame that draws the eye toward the central figure, while the red bed fills the entire lower portion and creates a visual platform for Cleopatra’s body. The diagonal of her pose creates movement, balanced by the snake’s horizontal curve and the lines of the fabrics. Warm light is concentrated on the skin, jewels, and red folds, leaving the background in shadow and enhancing the sense of depth. The greens, crimsons, golds, and browns create an intense chromatic rhythm.

In Cleopatra, Denys Calvaert connects his Flemish roots with the Italian artistic milieu and with a Mannerist sensibility evident in the composition, the intense colors, the drama, and the attention to ornamental detail. The richness of the accessories and the theatricality of the space make every element part of a carefully orchestrated scene. The snake cuts across this surface of luxury with a restrained, sinuous line, concentrating the tension of the entire painting, while the light transforms courtly beauty into the visible setting for imminent tragedy.
