Description

The painting depicts a scene of bathing and socializing in a bathhouse of ancient Rome. A stepped pool occupies the center of the space, leading the eye from the foreground to the group gathered above. In the water, two nude figures interact with their surroundings in a relaxed manner: one wears a garland of greenery and turns to the left, while the other, seen from behind, stretches out their arms. Women and attendants in light tunics, draped fabrics and resting poses are arranged around the raised pool. On the left, a large dark vase holds an abundant bouquet of violet flowers; at the lower edge, a lion’s head serves as a fountain spout, adding a sculptural accent to the architecture.

A Favorite Custom presents bathing as a pleasurable activity within a monumental interior. Roman bathhouses were not merely places devoted to hygiene; they also provided spaces for relaxation, conversation and socializing. The gathering of figures around the water conveys this public, everyday dimension, while the staircases, mosaics, stone surfaces and ornamental decoration create an ideal of classical luxury. The scene does not depict a specific historical event, but imagines a day of leisure in which bodily care and social life form part of the same experience.

Water shapes the work’s visual meaning. It serves as a place of repose, a gathering point, and a link between the foreground figures and those in the background. The lion’s head, transformed into a fountain, introduces an ornamental animal motif that enhances the space’s monumentality. The flower-filled vase and the fabrics arranged beside the parapet add a sensory, domestic dimension, extending the pleasure of bathing through color, texture, and ornamentation. The nudity of the two nearby figures contrasts with the light garments of the group above, underscoring the interplay of intimacy, sociability, and display.

The composition is organized through a sequence of planes and levels. The steps descend from the high opening in the background toward the pool, creating a diagonal that guides the eye to the submerged figures. The light-colored, curved, stepped parapet structures the right side, while the dark vase visually balances the left edge. Ivory whites, beiges, bluish grays, and muted greens predominate, punctuated by the violet of the flowers and the brown tones of the ornamental objects. Light moves across the pale surfaces, turning the stone, tiles, and water into a network of tranquil reflections. The abundance of figures is ordered by height, fabrics, and gestures, creating a leisurely rhythm of rest and conversation.

The work encapsulates traits associated with Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s academic style: an idealized recreation of antiquity, meticulous attention to architecture and materials, luminous surfaces, and a carefully ordered scene centered on classical daily life. The luxury depends not on any single detail, but on the interplay of water, flowers, garments, stone, and human presence. The staircase leads from the sociability in the background to the intimacy of the nude figures; along this progression, the title comes into focus, and bathing becomes a custom presented as a shared pleasure and a visual spectacle.
