Description

The painting ** "reaper" ** of 1912, created by the eminent Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, is part of a period of priority transformation within its artistic development. The work is presented as a visual testimony of the transition from the representative symbolism towards a more abstract and complex language, foreshadowing its subsequent immersion in suprematism.

Analyzing its composition, we find that the work focuses on the figure of a reaper, an allegory of rural work at its maximum expression. Through a dynamic use of color and shape, Malevich represents the reaper with strong and angular lines, encapsulating a work stamp that goes beyond realism. This resource gives you an almost sculptural quality, accentuated by the geometric simplification of forms. The figure of the reaper, in fact, is fragmented in various planes and angles, a characteristic present in other Malevich works of these years, where Cubism influences can be observed.

As for the color, "reaper" displays a vibrant palette that contrasts warm and cold tones, dominated mainly by red and blue. This chromatic choice is not accidental; Red, in particular, can be interpreted as a color of vitality and energy, associated with physical effort and human work, while blue provides a dimension of serenity to the rural context.

A relevant and, perhaps, less known of the work is the implementation of the "pictorial collage" technique. Color elements seem to be applied in shapes reminiscent of cuts stuck on the canvas, which could insinuate an influence of the cubist collage that impacted Malevich in those years. This technique allows the artist to play with depth and spatiality, giving the work of a peculiar three -dimensionality.

The figure of the reaper occupies a central but fragmented position, denoting movement and action. In the character of the character, we discern an archaic tillage instrument, whose angular structure is intertwined with the body's lines, creating an unwavering unit between man and his tool. This element symbolizes the inseparable link between human and earth, a recurring theme in Malevich's work before its total immersion in abstractionism.

It is undeniable that "reaper" shares a visual and conceptual connection with other pieces of that time, such as "the lumberjack" or "the peasant", where Malevich also explores the human condition through peasant figures. However, "reaper" is distinguished by his bold formal experimentalism, which serves as a prelude to his suprematist phase, where his most recognized works would arrive such as the "black square."

Kazimir Malevich, with "reaper", invites us to a reflection on the transition and metamorphosis in its own creative process, as well as in the socioeconomic and cultural context of the Russia of the early twentieth century. It is a work that, through its unique combination of shapes and colors, offers a window to the concerns and aspirations of a constantly search for a new visual language.
