Description

In the vast and rich trajectory of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, a Hungarian artist of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, his "old fisherman" painting of 1902 stands out as an emblematic work, dazzling in his simplicity and loaded with meaning. Although it is not among the best known works of the artist, this piece offers an exceptional style and vision window that characterize Csontváry, a pioneer of modernism in Hungary.

A detailed inspection of the painting reveals an intriguing and deep duality. In the foreground, as indicated by the title, we find an old fisherman, although it is evident that the composition is fragmented in two almost symmetrical and inverse halves: the left part and the right part of the same old man, reflected in an antithetic way. On the left, the fisherman shows a peaceful and reflexive expression with the arm raised in a gesture of blessing and the right footing, evoking some mysticism and serenity. On the right, we find its most gloomy and bleak reflex, with the arm raised in a gesture of curse and the left foot footwear with a black boot, accentuating a latent tension and a sensation of threat.

This use of the inverted reflection not only highlights the technical ability of Csontváry, but also suggests a deeper and more philosophical meaning. It could be interpreted as a representation of the duality inherent in the human being, the eternal struggle between good and evil, calm and storm, present in each individual. This theme of duality resonates with many of the ideas of symbolism, an artistic movement that deeply influenced Csontváry.

The environment where the old fisherman is equally worthy of mention. In the background there are small homes and a landscape that, at first glance, seems simple, but is loaded with detail and color. The soft wavy hills and houses in the distance are painted with a masterful use of the color that varies in tones from the earthy green to a deep blue of the water, which reflects the light in an almost ethereal way.

In color terms, the palette used by Csontváry is rich and varied. The blue and green dominate the composition, while earthly and white tones provide contrast and balance. This use of color not only creates a harmonious atmosphere but also highlights the tension between the two halves of the old fisherman, even more emphasizing the duality present in the work.

Csontvary's work is a testimony of his personal and spiritual journey. Initially formed in the pharmaceutical field, his artistic vocation flourished after a spiritual revelation that led him to study and practice painting with an almost mystical devotion. This vital and spiritual intensity is reflected in each brushstroke, in every meticulously careful detail of "old fisherman." Although Csontvarian was largely self -taught, his work shows a deep understanding of the techniques and artistic currents of his time, mixed with a uniquely personal style.

"Old fisherman - 1902" is, without a doubt, a privileged window to the particular universe of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka. Each observer can find in this work not only the artist's technical skill, but also an inexhaustible source of reflection on the human condition and its inherent contradictions. In the vast ocean of modern art, Csontváry stands out as a lighthouse of originality and depth, capable of illuminating even the most restless souls.
