This last work by Mantegna testifies to the great influence that antiquity had on Renaissance art. The latter understood himself as a revival of the classical era. After the supposedly artless "dark" era of the Middle Ages, a fundamental renewal of the arts was sought. Mantegna was substantially involved in rediscovering antiquity and using it as a new model.
