At the center, a woman dressed in black and covered with a light-colored veil clasps her hands before the Christ Child, lying naked on the ground beside a red cloth. Beside her, an elderly man with a gray beard, a red tunic and a dark cloak bends forward in quiet reverence. In the lower-left area, several winged figures kneel or bend around the newborn. The shed’s beams, columns and arches structure the scene, while two small figures remain in the background and the hills, trees and distant settlement draw the eye outward.
The work depicts the birth of Jesus Christ, one of the central subjects of Christian tradition. The woman can be identified as the Virgin Mary and the elderly man as Saint Joseph, united here in silent contemplation. The angels take part in the adoration and also evoke the announcement of Christ’s arrival. The humble space of wood and masonry reflects the traditional depiction of the stable or shed, but the opening onto the countryside expands the event beyond the intimacy of the family: the birth unfolds in a whole world that seems to welcome it.
The iconography focuses on the figures’ gestures and arrangement. Mary’s clasped hands, Joseph’s hand on his chest and the angels’ bowed heads create a rhythm of reverence that draws the eye toward the child. The black of Mary's dress establishes the central axis and contrasts with the red of Joseph's tunic and the golden ochres of the winged figures. The bright lighting highlights the faces, hands, and body of the child, guiding the viewer's attention from the adult figures down to the lowest point of the scene. In the background, the green and blue landscape adds depth and air; its hills and distant buildings balance the density of the foreground. The beams and columns, in turn, create lines that lead the eye toward the horizon.
