The scene belongs to the Christian tradition that presents Saint Jerome as a hermit saint devoted to prayer, penance and the study of Scripture. Dark greens, brownish blacks, and ochres form a compact base, broken by the figure’s ivory white, the reds of the fabrics, and the water’s grayish blue. The elevated horizon allows the lake and fields to breathe, while the small houses and hills extend the scene into a silent distance. The eye moves from the nearby details of vegetation to the distant clarity of the landscape.
The work is associated with a widely recognized feature of Hieronymus Bosch’s imagery: the combination of religious themes with open landscapes, minute details, and unsettling organic forms. The fantastic is integrated into the everyday texture of the earth, trees, and objects, without being separated from the natural world. The saintly figure does not dominate the space through scale, but through concentration: his withdrawal visually organizes everything around him.
