Description

The painting depicts Saint Jerome as an elderly penitent seated at a table, in profile and facing a skull placed on the right side of the composition. His white hair and beard stand out against the dark background, while his bare torso and the red cloth draped over his back and body underscore the austerity of the scene. His right arm is bent toward his face, and his hand holds a long, dark object; in front of him, a white sheet rests on the table’s gray-green surface. The figure occupies the center and left side of the painting, while the skull establishes a silent, contemplative dialogue with him.

Saint Jerome belongs to the Christian tradition of scholarly and ascetic saints. In addition to his association with the study of Scripture and the translation of the Bible into Latin, tradition portrays him as a man withdrawn from worldly life, devoted to prayer, penance, and spiritual reflection. His advanced age, beard, and partial nudity evoke this image of renunciation and eremitic life. The sheet on the table also introduces an intellectual dimension: alongside the penitent’s isolation appears the figure of the scholar, whose spiritual discipline is connected with reading and writing.

The skull serves as the symbolic focus of the work. In the iconography of penitent saints and hermits, this motif acts as a memento mori, a reminder of death and the fleeting nature of existence. Its proximity to Saint Jerome’s face turns meditation into a visual confrontation between the vitality of the body and the permanence of death. The red of the mantle brings an intense, earthly note to a scene dominated by ochres, browns, and grays. The austerity of the setting concentrates the meaning in the body, the skull, and the sheet, with no secondary elements to distract from this reflection.

The vertical, compact composition guides the eye through a precise chain of relationships. First, the illuminated head and beard draw attention; then the direction of his profile leads toward the skull, while the arm forms a diagonal across the intervening space. The table acts as a horizontal base that stabilizes the whole and separates the body from the dark field of the background. Warm light shapes the torso, face, and red cloth with soft transitions, while leaving broad areas in shadow. This contrast concentrates the figure’s volume and gives the skull, bright and sharply outlined against the background, an almost tangible presence.

In Saint Jerome in Penitence, Simone Cantarini combines the delicacy of drawing and refined figurative construction characteristic of his Italian Baroque milieu with lighting of intense devotional force. The scene needs no expansive landscape to suggest retreat: the neutral background, table, and proximity of the saint to the skull are enough to create an interior space for contemplation. Notice how the red visually links the body with the shadow, and how the sheet introduces a bright pause beside the hand. Amid these touches of color, the work transforms contemplation of death into a meditation on knowledge, discipline, and human fragility.
