Description

The painting was created in a field where peasants are seen working in the background, harvesting grapes. In the foreground, an elegant majo offering a bunch of ripe grapes to a girl. However, a boy with his back to the viewer approaches to grab the grapes. Behind them is a peasant woman balancing grapes in a basket on her head.

Both the majo and the girl to whom he offers some grapes are seated on a raised concrete platform, possibly watching how the peasants work in the fields. The painting shows the great contrast between rich and poor that became evident at the time. The rich had everything they wanted, while the poor did not have enough to live on.

The harvest in Spain takes place during the autumn, after which it is taken to the winery for the production of wines. This tradition has been around for centuries. Goya captures one of the many grape harvest periods that he witnessed throughout his life and shows the inequality that characterized the society of that time. The artist used the art style of romanticism when creating this masterpiece. This type of art focused on feelings, emotions and all kinds of spirituality in painting.

The painting is currently in the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. The size of the painting is 267.5 cm by 190.5 cm.
