Description

Westbury's horse (1939) by British artist Eric Ravilious is a work that encapsulates the essence of the English rural landscape with a subtle mastery. Observing the painting, we find an extensive and serene panorama that develops under the majestic presence of Westbury's white horse, a chalk figure on the hillside of a hill that becomes the absolute protagonist of the scene.

The first impression that the painting transmits is a feeling of tranquility and open space. Ravilious uses a palette of soft and cold colors, predominantly in tones of green and blue, which contribute to creating an atmosphere of pastoral calm. The hill is deployed in a gradient of green and ocher, interspersed with delicate shadows that suggest a undulating topography, while the sky, cloudy and blurred, reflects the light of a plumb day, typical trait of the English countryside.

The artistic composition is remarkably geometric and balanced. The white horse, with its curved lines and its impossiblely motionless presence, is located in a slight diagonal that goes from the upper right to the lower left part of the canvas. This position not only gives dynamism to the scene, but also guides the observer's gaze through painting, inviting him visually walking through the rest of the landscape. In the background, various hills and fields that extend to the horizon are emerged, captured with precision that seems almost topographic.

Ravilious's technique stands out for its meticulous detail. Precursor of the Renaissance of Watercolor Painting in England in the early twentieth century, Ravilus shows in this work his deep domain of the technique. The texture and play of lights and shadows in the fields, as well as the tones off from the cloudy sky, are achieved by thin and modulated color layers, providing both detail and a light impression.

It is interesting to notice the absence of human or animal figures in the landscape, focusing all the attention on the interaction between the gigantic form of the white horse and the surrounding nature. This can be interpreted as a reflection of isolation and the constant immobility of these rural landscapes, where artificial elements such as the famous white horse, a historical figure traced to ancient times and carved in the characteristic field of the region, seem to be eternal witnesses of the passage weather.

Ravilous, belonging to the movement known as British Neorromanticism, seeks to capture the spirit and essence of the English landscape in an era of change and modernization. His work often presents an intimate relationship with the place, highlighting historical and cultural elements that are both specific and symbolic in their environment. "Westbury's horse" is no exception, placing the observer at a timeless moment inside the English landscape.

Through this work, Ravilus not only represents a geographical view but also a sense of belonging and nostalgia that resonates with collective memory. "Westbury's horse" thus becomes a window to the past and a meditation on the permanence of nature and the fragility of human intervention in it. Ravilus' work remains an invitation to rediscover the landscapes that defines with a balance between the meticulous detail and the evocative atmosphere.
