Description

"Who Can Think of It?" (1823) is one of the most disturbing and profound works by the Spanish master Francisco Goya, who has been considered one of the key figures of European art and a precursor of Romanticism and Expressionism. In this painting, Goya reveals his critical view of the human condition, its suffering and the violence inherent in society.

The work is characterised by its dramatic composition and its disturbing atmosphere. In the centre, a thin female figure can be seen, dressed in a dark tunic that contrasts with the ghostly surroundings. The woman, with an elongated face and an expression of anguish, seems to confront the inexplicable, while a disembodied hand reaches out towards her, as if imparting a fatal message or even as if trying to catch her. This surreal and almost dreamlike element is a hallmark of Goya's aesthetic evolution, especially in his later years, where the limits of reason are questioned and madness and delirium appear recurrently.

The use of color in Who Can Think of It? is particularly effective in conveying its message. Goya employs a somber palette, with dark tones predominating, which reinforce the mood of unease. The contrast between the shadows and the touches of light in the central figure contributes to the feeling of isolation and vulnerability, a reflection of the anguish that characterizes many of the artist's later works. The technique of chiaroscuro, which he mastered, is expressed here in its purest form, accentuating the three-dimensionality of the forms and the emotional intensity.

The characters in the work, though largely absent, converse in their silence about alienation and the absurdity of existence. The female figure can be interpreted not only as an individual being, but also as an emblem of humanity confronting forces it cannot understand. This idea of the struggle against the incomprehensible resonated in the context of post-Napoleonic Europe, a time of profound social upheaval and crisis that Goya experienced intensely.

Goya, more than a mere observer, became a chronicler of his time, capturing not only the beauty but also the decay and suffering of the human psyche. Who Can Think of It? is, in that sense, a mirror of his fears, anxieties, and his sense of moral duty to address what others would rather ignore. As in his series of etchings The Disasters of War, Goya evidences his commitment to truth, revealing the darkness lurking beneath the surface of the social order.

The complexity and ambiguity of Who Can Think of It? makes it a point of connection between classical art and the modernist currents that would flourish later. It invites the viewer to explore not only the visual content, but also the emotional state that it triggers. In a single image, Goya manages to link the horror and beauty of existence, a perpetual theme that resonates through the centuries and continues to impact us today. His ability to capture the essence of the human and the tragic secures his place as one of the great masters of painting, whose work invites continued contemplation and deep analysis.
