Description

Henri Rousseau, also known as Le Douanier, is a fundamental pillar of naif art and a precursor of modernism at the end of the 19th and early twentieth century. In his work "El Molino" (1896), Rousseau offers a unique vision that combines an almost dreamlike character with meticulous attention to the elements of nature. This painting, like many of his works, is marked by simplicity in his style, but in turn encloses a deep visual complexity that invites contemplation.

The composition of "El Molino" focuses on the representation of a rural mill, surrounded by an lush landscape that seemed taken from a dream. The structure of the mill, although rudimentary in its form, is erected with an imposition that evokes as much nostalgia and a sense of belonging to a more idyllic rural past. The perspective that Rousseau uses to the viewer to an almost enveloping experience, as if he were approaching this peaceful and lonely scenario. Here, nature is not only a simple background, but a vital component that dialogues with the construction of the mill, which reflects the artist's admiration for the simplicity of country life.

The use of color is another of the distinctive characteristics of this work. Rousseau uses a vibrant palette, where vegetation greens contrast with the warm tones and mill terracotta. This use of color not only serves to create an atmosphere of vitality, but also establishes an emotional connection with the viewer. The games of light and shadow, typical of Rousseau's work, add depth to the scene, enhancing the three -dimensionality of the elements represented.

Interestingly, there are no visible human characters in "El Molino", which is a recurring element in Rousseau's work. This absence can be interpreted as a reflection on the relationship between nature and the human being. Instead of focusing attention on human activity, Rousseau directs our gaze towards the landscape, suggesting harmony and coexistence with the natural environment. Through this choice, an introspective dialogue that encourages the viewer to look for their own connection with the space represented is established.

The work is inserted in a broader context where Rousseau began to be recognized in France, especially after his exhibition in the Hall of Independents of 1905. His distinctive approach to painting, which challenges the academic conventions of the time, has positioned as a precursor of subsequent movements that would celebrate art outside of traditional currents, such as surrealism and primitivism.

"El Molino" is among the works that reaffirm the importance of Rousseau as an innovator of art. The work, although simple in its execution, loads with a great evocative and symbolic load. The interaction between the human being and nature is a common theme in art, but Rousseau translates it into a unique visual language, where simplicity and depth coexist in a space for contemplation. When observing "El Molino", the spectator is invited to reflect on his own existence within the vast landscape of nature, where peace and calm of the environment offer a refuge in the agitation of the modern world that Rousseau began to glimpse.
