However, despite the gloomy palette, there is a subtle luminosity that seems to emanate from certain areas of painting, suggesting the possibility of redemption or hope in the middle of hardship. This use of color can be interpreted as a metaphor of human struggles: darkness and light coexist in a visual dance.

The arrangement of the characters and their interaction with space are another key element of the work. The way in which they are grouped, as well as the physical proximity between them, suggests an emotional and existential connection, underlining the sense of community among those who are marginalized by society. This approach to the isolation and alienation of the vagrants is aligned with the increasingly prominent social issues in the art of the late nineteenth century, which makes the work resonate with contemporary sensitivity.

Toorop, who was influenced by Japanese symbolism and art, achieves with "the vagrants" to transmit a complex narrative through a visual language that combines stylized forms with an almost poetic approach.
