Description

Lorenzo Lotto's Transfiguration painting is an Italian Renaissance masterpiece noted for its complexity and visual richness. With an original size of 300 x 203 cm, this work is one of the artist's largest and most ambitious, and is currently in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC

One of the most interesting aspects of the painting is its artistic style, which combines elements of the Italian Renaissance with influences from Flemish and German art. This can be seen in the attention to detail and texture of the fabrics and objects, as well as the realistic depiction of the characters and nature.

The composition of the work is also very striking, with a complex structure that is divided into three levels. On the upper level, there is the figure of Christ transfigured, surrounded by the prophets Moses and Elijah. In the middle level, are the disciples of Christ, who contemplate the scene in wonder. And on the lower level, there are the sick and needy who seek the help of the disciples.

Color is another prominent element of the painting, with a rich and varied palette that includes warm and cool tones, creating a sense of depth and lightness. The gold and silver details of the clothing and objects also add a touch of shine and splendor to the work.

The history of the painting is also very interesting, as it was commissioned by the Bishop of Recanati in 1512 to decorate the chapel of San Domenico in the church of San Nicolo in Tolentino. However, the work was rejected by the bishop due to its complexity and unconventional style, and it was sold to a private collector. The painting was later acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC in 1937.

In summary, Lorenzo Lotto's painting Transfiguration is an exceptional work of the Italian Renaissance that stands out for its artistic style, its complex composition, its rich and varied color palette, and its fascinating history. This masterpiece continues to be a source of inspiration and admiration for art lovers around the world.
