Description

The painting presents a floral still life arranged horizontally against a predominantly black background, interrupted by a deep blue area on the right. Dark branches and stems run through the composition, supporting an abundant succession of white, red, pink and orange flowers, alongside leaves, buds and seed pods. At the bottom, a pear in reddish, ochre and greenish tones balances the left side, while a round orange fruit appears among the foliage on the right. Small winged insects can be seen among the branches, and a small mammal with a prickly back draws attention to the center-right, like a living presence within this inventory of plants.

As a genre, still life arranges plants, fruit, animals and objects for attentive contemplation. Here, the scene does not depict a specific historical or religious episode: its interest lies in the orderly gathering of different forms of life. The profusion of flowers turns the painting into a celebration of nature’s variety, while the fruit and buds introduce different stages of development. The presence of the small mammal and the insects broadens the field of observation beyond the botanical repertoire and brings the composition close to a concentrated, almost theatrical vision of the natural world.

The brightly colored flowers and fruit serve as signs of abundance and transient beauty, not through any single, fixed allegory, but through the way their diversity is presented to the viewer. The insects and the small mammal bring an active dimension to an essentially motionless scene: among the leaves and petals, nature seems to continue its own cycle. The dark background heightens this effect, as each pale flower, warm-colored fruit and tiny creature takes on a precious, self-contained presence. The composition thus brings together the delicate and the rugged, the plant and animal worlds, in a balance of coexistence.

The panoramic structure guides the eye from one end to the other along a continuous line of branches and stems. Vertical accents are arranged across this horizontal foundation: open flowers, elongated buds, and petals that raise the rhythm toward the upper part. The whites and silvery grays stand out sharply against the blacks, deep greens, and browns, while the reds, oranges, and ochres serve as focal points of visual warmth. The pear first draws attention to the left edge; from there, the vegetal arrangement leads the eye toward the small mammal and the orange-colored fruit on the right. Focused lighting shapes the petals and the surfaces of the fruits, creating depth without diminishing the density of the background.

The work is associated with the floral still lifes of Orsola Maddalena Caccia, an artist known for her attention to plant species, the orderly accumulation of natural motifs, and the contrast between flowers, fruits, and dark backgrounds. In this Still Life, that sensibility takes shape as a combination of meticulous inventory and dramatic staging. The small animals alter the way the bouquet is read: they are not merely decorative additions, but points of life that animate the stillness of the composition. The painting draws its strength from this tension between stillness and movement, abundance and darkness, botanical detail and animal presence.
