Description
The Water Bearer is shown from a low perspective and is painted full-length.
La Aguadora's posture is singular. In it, the central figure supports the water jug on the hip while holding a basket with the other hand. This position has classical connotations and transforms the subject from a position of submission and work to one of heroism. Another remarkable aspect of La Aguadora is its color combination.
The protagonist wears a white shawl wrapped around her chest, a dark reddish-brown skirt, and a yellow sash tied around her waist to help support the weight of the water jug. The colors used in the clothing create strong areas of contrast and are further complemented by the use of orange in the water jug and dark grays and blues in the background.
La Aguadora was a popular painting in its time and several copies of this work exist.
