Description

The painting depicts The Annunciation to Joachim as a religious scene unfolding in a pastoral landscape. At the far left, a winged figure in a reddish tunic and halo extends a hand toward a white-bearded old man, seated on a rocky rise and also distinguished by a halo. Below, a young figure holds an ochre-colored object, while another figure, standing beneath the trees, carries a shepherd’s staff. Sheep and goats gather in the lower right area among small shrubs, rocky platforms and terraced slopes. The gold background and ornamental band running along the edges transform the natural setting into a sacred, carefully bounded space.

The episode belongs to the apocryphal and medieval Christian tradition. Joachim and Anne are traditionally considered the parents of the Virgin Mary, and in this account an angel tells Joachim of Anne’s future conception and motherhood. The apparition takes place in a setting associated with shepherding and Joachim’s secluded life, so the flock and staff are not incidental details: they anchor the revelation in the concrete experience of waiting, work and isolation. The scene turns an intimate message into a narrative image that can be read at a glance, with the messenger and the old man at its spiritual center.

The halos focus attention on the two figures directly involved in the revelation. The angel, standing and communicating, introduces an upward movement that contrasts with Joachim’s withdrawn posture. The flock visually extends the old man’s presence into the pastoral world and adds a dimension of care and watchfulness. The white, dark and mottled animals form an irregular rhythm that softens the geometry of the rocks, while the dark trees serve as landmarks framing the narrative. Rather than depicting natural light, the gold background suspends the episode in devotional time, apart from any everyday landscape.

The horizontal composition is organized around 2 related focal points: the encounter between the angel and Joachim on the left, and the grouping of figures and animals in the lower right. The diagonals of the hills lead the eye from the rocky platforms toward the group, while the dark trunks and treetops balance the upper section. The linear drawing clearly defines the figures, the folds, and the animals; the earthy colors of the landscape contrast with the red, dark blue, white, and gold of the figures and the background. Depth does not depend on naturalistic perspective, but on the layering of slopes, trees, and bodies, creating successive planes that allow the scene to be read as a continuous narrative.

In this work, Bartolo Di Fredi draws on Trecento Sienese painting through the expressive use of the gold background, the crisp outlines, the figures arranged on a narrative scale, and the stylized landscape in the service of a religious image. The painting turns a private revelation into a scene of great clarity: the messenger’s gesture, Joachim’s receptive attitude, and the pastoral life unfolding around them establish a connection between the supernatural and the everyday. Note how the tiered hills and the flock not only fill the space, but also guide the eye to the moment when the news changes the meaning of the entire scene.
