Based on the fact that the saint's attribute, the knife, is missing from the image, recent research established that the painting depicts the martyrdom of Saint Philip, who was one of the first disciples to follow Jesus. He preached the Gospel in Phrygia and died in Hierapolis, first stoned than crucified.
