Description

The painting depicts a broad, densely populated rural scene in which several human figures gather around animals, vessels and bundles. A white horse draws attention in the central-left area, beside a bearded man wearing a reddish hat and dark clothing. Sheep, goats, a dark bovine and a brown pig appear in the foreground among bowls, pots and a large vat. Trees with dark trunks frame the composition and lead the eye towards a path, small buildings and blue mountains stretching into the distance.

The title refers to the biblical episode in which Moses strikes a rock and water gushes from it for the Israelite community. The narrative is linked to the Israelites’ journey through the desert and their collective survival needs. The work presents this context as a communal, pastoral scene: people, pack animals, livestock and utensils share the same space, connecting the religious story with the practical tasks of a people on the move.

The vessels arranged across the foreground make for a particularly expressive reading. Bowls, pots and the large vat evoke the collection and distribution of water or provisions, linking the miraculous dimension of the story with the needs of the body. The abundance of livestock reinforces the idea of a community travelling with its possessions, while the white horse introduces a luminous accent within the earthy palette. The path stretching towards the mountains turns the landscape into an image of passage, collective trial and shared hope.

The horizontal composition is structured around an intense concentration of forms in the foreground, opening gradually toward the horizon. The leaning figures create a rhythm of gestures, vessels, and animal bodies that contrasts with the steady verticality of the trees. The white horse serves as a bright pause amid the browns, deep greens, ochres, and earthy reds, drawing the eye toward the narrative’s central focus. From there, the path and mountains create atmospheric depth through blue-gray tones and overlapping silhouettes. Warm light filtering through the foliage brings each figure together in a lively, dynamic scene.

The work reflects traits widely associated with Leandro Bassano and the Bassano tradition: crowded biblical scenes, particular attention to animals, landscapes with a sense of depth, and narratives carried by a warm palette. Here, the episode of Moses unfolds as a pastoral vision in which sacred history coexists with labor, travel, and the care of resources. The white horse, the vessels in the foreground, and the line of the path form a visual chain linking figures, animals, and mountains, turning the story of water into a compact image of community cooperation.
