Description

The painting depicts Judith at the Banquet of Holofernes, amid an outdoor feast attended by numerous figures in a rural landscape. A rectangular table covered with a white tablecloth and laden with food, plates and vessels occupies the center of the composition. Figures wearing vividly colored garments, hats, headdresses, capes and pieces of armor gather around it. In the foreground, a figure seen from behind, wrapped in a red cloak trimmed with green, serves as the visual focus of the scene. On the left, a leafy tree laden with red and orange fruit spreads its branches over the group; beneath the table, a light-colored dog adds a domestic, intimate touch. In the background are fields, hills and tents with reddish stripes, while several spears rise above the diners.

The episode comes from the Book of Judith, a biblical narrative in the deuterocanonical tradition. Judith enters the camp of Holofernes, a general who is the Jews’ enemy, and joins the gathering and banquet that precede the story’s conclusion. The narrative ends with the death of Holofernes and the liberation of Judith’s people. Here, the story focuses on the encounter: the heroine is part of a seemingly festive gathering, although the camp, weapons and armor keep the military tension underlying the episode in view.

The table serves as the focal point of hospitality, exchange, and power. Its food and vessels transform the biblical action into a concrete social scene, while the tents and spears extend this sociability into the setting of a military camp. The fruit tree adds a sense of abundance and brightness, but also creates a contrast with the latent threat surrounding the figures. The presence of the dog, tucked beneath the tablecloth, heightens the banquet’s everyday character. Together, these elements bring the domestic and the dangerous into close proximity: the gathering’s outward cordiality is threaded through with the story of deception, violence, and liberation associated with Judith.

The composition is structured around a strong central concentration. The white tablecloth visually separates the table from the earthy ground and draws the eye to the food and the hands gathered around it. The figure seen from behind, positioned in front of the table, creates a barrier in the foreground that directs attention toward the group and then out toward the open landscape. The tree balances the human presence at the center and frames the left side, while the spears introduce vertical lines that break up the table’s horizontality. The reds, ochres, greens, and blues of the garments create a varied chromatic rhythm; in contrast, the white tablecloth and bright sky bring order to the abundance of detail. Depth emerges from the contrast between the crowded figures and the serene expanse of fields in the background.

In Lucas Cranach the Elder’s work, biblical and courtly compositions are widely characterized by sharply defined figures, contrasting colors, and close attention to clothing and landscape. This work brings these features together in a densely narrative scene, where the hats, weapons, garments, and poses help construct a historical world rendered with ornamental clarity. It is worth observing how the brightness of the landscape does not dispel the danger but makes it more subtle: the table promises celebration, while the camp reminds us that hospitality is also the setting for a decisive confrontation.
