Description

The work presents an abstract construction of space in which a cluster of rectangular blocks occupies the lower third of the composition. The forms, overlapping and staggered, evoke an imaginary architecture: low volumes, narrow vertical elements, pale planes that project forward and small scattered pieces that extend toward the right edge. Above this ensemble opens a broad, dark gray-green field, interrupted only by a reddish strip at the top. In the upper right area, isolated from the rest of the elements, floats an oval disc made up of small cells in pink, orange, yellow and violet. The title, Selected Site, steers the interpretation toward a singular setting, delimited within a silent, almost suspended landscape.

This is not a narrative scene in the traditional sense, but a visual meditation on the construction of a place. The lower cluster can be understood as an abstract settlement or architecture reduced to its essential components: modules, columns, platforms and fragments of wall. The space around it does not describe a concrete geography; it functions as an open territory in which that small built nucleus acquires an exceptional presence. In this context, the title does not name a city or a recognizable point on a map, but proposes a spatial and conceptual idea: that of a selected site, separated from the surrounding void and charged with meaning by its own position.

The relationships among the elements create a poetic iconography. The architectural ensemble concentrates the notion of shelter, settlement or boundary, while the large dark background intensifies its isolation. The checkered disc acts as a suspended counterpoint: its regular cells and luminous range introduce a chromatic signal that can be read as a heavenly sign, a distant object or a purely imaginary form. The work preserves that element apart from any literal explanation and converts it into a presence of balance opposite the lower mass. The separation between the two poles — the terrestrial structure and the floating disc — fosters a meditative reading about orientation, distance and belonging.

The vertical composition relies on an asymmetrical and carefully calculated distribution. The visual weight is concentrated below, where the horizontal lines of the base and the accumulation of rectangles generate stability, but the vertical elements introduce pauses and ascents that prevent rigidity. The ample negative space directs the gaze upward and allows the disc on the right to function as a secondary focal point. Dark contours, overlapping planes and modular fragmentation construct depth without resorting to conventional perspective. Against the grayish green and reddish-brown, the small pink, orange, yellow and violet accents acquire an almost luminous intensity. The upper red band completes the chromatic balance and establishes a tension between the upper area and the terrestrial base.

In Selected Site, Paul Klee approaches a poetic construction of space through geometric signs, expressive color and symbolic ambiguity. The architecture does not appear as a technical description but as a language of forms capable of suggesting landscape, settlement and thought simultaneously. The scene invites the viewer to observe how a few blocks transform an empty field into a place, and how the checked disk expands that space into an imaginary dimension. It is worth pausing on the distance between the two centers: there, in the void that separates them, the painting turns an arrangement of forms into an open, enigmatic and carefully balanced vision.
