Description

The painting presents an abstract composition built from angular planes, curved forms and overlapping color fields. Against a bluish-gray ground marked by fine vertical lines, a large black mass occupies the left side and immediately establishes a strong visual weight. In the center a white, jagged-edged shape appears, pierced by a small black circle, while a light, tilted plane recedes behind it. Toward the right, a broad olive-green field curves across the middle and lower areas; above it, a checkerboard pattern of dark and light squares introduces a regular, easily recognizable accent. Ochres, yellows, browns and grays complete a dense structure, with no human figures or identifiable objects.

As an abstract work, the painting does not develop a figurative narrative nor depict a specific episode. Its content is articulated through relationships between surfaces, lines, rhythms and color contrasts. The composition turns the pictorial space into a visual architecture: each plane advances, recedes or interrupts the path of the others, so the gaze circulates between zones of geometric stability and freer outlines. Within this framework, Mainie Jellett’s work participates in a modern conception of abstraction in which color and form cease to be descriptive resources and become the primary elements of the visual experience.

The checkerboard pattern in the upper-right functions as a rhythmic and structural focal point. Its squares introduce a precise regularity within an ensemble dominated by irregular profiles and give the eye a measure with which to compare the other forms. At the opposite extreme, the large black mass provides weight and acts as a counterpoint to the white and colored surfaces in the center and right. The overlapping planes of white, ochre, green and yellow generate a sense of abstract depth, not based on the illusion of a landscape but on proximity, overlap and tension between chromatic fields.

The composition is carefully balanced despite its fragmented appearance. The black on the left concentrates attention because of its density, but the elevated checkerboard and the broad green plane counterbalance its presence and guide the visual journey toward the right. The yellow bands in the lower area contribute luminosity and horizontal movement, while the vertical lines in the background sustain a more stable direction. The result is a rhythm of diagonals, curves and rectangular cuts: the forms fit together like pieces of a shifting structure. The dark edges of the perimeter reinforce the impression of a contained visual field, almost architectural.

The work relates to Mainie Jellett’s visual language and to the development of modern abstraction in Ireland, particularly through its geometric arrangement, its Cubist and Orphic sensibility, and its use of color as structure. Here, however, the geometry is not presented as a cold or perfectly regular system: it coexists with organic masses, tilts and uneven contours that keep the composition in tension. The central black dot, the checked pattern and the dark mass on the left form a network of accents that organizes the entire surface. The painting finds its strength in that balance between order and freedom, between the precision of the module and the vitality of the irregular form.
