Stefan Locherner's painting Adoration of the Magi is a masterpiece of German Gothic art from the 15th century. This work is in the collection of the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain.

Locherner used a detailed and painstaking painting technique to create a work of great beauty and complexity. The composition of the painting is impressive, with the Magi kneeling before the Child Jesus in the center of the image, surrounded by a multitude of characters and animals.

The use of color in the work is impressive. Brilliant shades of blue, red and gold combine to create an image that is vibrant and full of life. The use of gold in the painting is particularly notable, as it is used to highlight the importance and divinity of the characters depicted.

The story behind the painting is fascinating. It was commissioned by the Augsburg patrician family, the Welsers, for their private chapel in the Church of St. John the Baptist in Augsburg. The painting was created sometime between 1440 and 1450.

A little known aspect of the painting is that it was stolen by Napoleonic troops in 1806 and taken to Paris. It was returned to Germany in 1816 and finally found its home in the National Art Museum of Catalonia in 1923.
