Description

The painting shows a still life of musical instruments arranged on a dark table in a dense, carefully balanced grouping. A large reddish wooden instrument crosses the upper area horizontally, leading the eye to its scroll, which extends to the right. Other string instruments, curved bodies, necks and darker-toned pieces overlap around it. A bow rests on the main instrument, while several handwritten musical scores lie open and folded in the foreground. On the right, a small group of fruit adds a warm, organic note. The table, with its turned legs, fills the lower part and places the ensemble in a restrained, theatrical domestic space.

In Evaristo Baschenis’s work, the instruments are not part of a narrative scene, but form the central subject of a still life devoted to the world of music. The combination of instruments, bows and sheet music connects visual contemplation with musical practice: the performance lies outside the frame, but its objects remain gathered on the table. The absence of human figures heightens the sense of pause, as if the moment depicted fell between one performance and the next. The painting thus makes the material culture of music an independent subject, attentive to the form, surface and memories held by these objects.

The handwritten sheet music reinforces the relationship between written music, knowledge, and performance. Opposite it, the instruments reveal the physical dimension of that experience: polished wood, curves, strings, scrolls, and bows poised to produce sound. The fruit provides a sensory counterpoint to the manufactured objects; its presence introduces color, organic matter, and a subtle suggestion of abundance and transience, without displacing the composition’s musical core. The dark background and side lighting make each element seem to emerge from a zone of silence. Taken as a whole, the scene can be read as a silent architecture of forms preserving the trace of an absent activity.

The horizontal composition is organized around the long visual diagonal of the main instrument. Its reddish body serves as an axis and establishes a sense of scale in relation to the smaller instruments, sheets of paper, and tabletop. The sheet music and the red ribbon in the foreground introduce descending lines that disrupt the horizontal stability and draw the eye into the depth of the scene. The chiaroscuro focuses attention on the illuminated surfaces: the light-colored papers, the wood grain, and the muted reflections on the instrument bodies stand out against the browns, blacks, and ochres of the surroundings. The table’s turned legs add vertical rhythm and visually support the accumulation of objects, while the tiled floor opens up a limited space behind the arrangement.

The work is part of Evaristo Baschenis’s well-known body of still lifes featuring musical instruments, with particular attention to the textures of wood, paper and the objects brought together by warm, contrasting light. Its appeal does not depend on visible action, but on the transformation of everyday objects into an intense pictorial presence. Notice how the scroll, bow and sheet music link the different areas of the painting: each element remains still, yet together they suggest music continuing beyond the surface. The contemplative power of Musical Instruments lies in this tension between absent sound, tangible material and enveloping darkness..
