Description

The painting presents an abstract, horizontal composition, densely layered with gestural marks, brought together under a title that makes movement its poetic principle: Improvisation with Horses. Against a broad background of cream, beige, ochre and brown, patches of color, rounded forms and dark lines unfold across the surface like graphic impulses. On the left, clusters of white, blue, pink, red and green form centers of organic activity; on the right edge, a vertical concentration responds with a similar chromatic rhythm. Between these two areas, a large, angular, jagged black stroke cuts across the center, while elongated blue and brown forms run along the lower band.

The title suggests an association between abstract improvisation and the dynamic vitality of horses, rather than describing a literal equestrian scene. The work belongs to the context of Improvisations by Wassily Kandinsky, associated with the development of abstract painting and with an approach in which color, line and composition can stand on their own. The equestrian reference thus serves as an open-ended narrative cue: it directs the viewer’s perception toward impulse, speed and spontaneous response, while the surface retains its nonfigurative autonomy.

The rounded forms on either side bring vitality and an abundance of color. Their intense hues emerge against the muted background as centers of activity, creating a tension between concentration and dispersion. The large central black stroke introduces a decisive direction, like an arrow or a sudden break, connecting different areas of the composition and reinforcing the sense of impulse. The dark, writing-like marks add an almost calligraphic dimension: they convey no legible message, but create pauses, accents and cadences. The title and these marks make movement a perceptual quality rather than an illustrated narrative.

The composition is organized through contrasts. The light, earthy background provides a relatively restful field against the reds, blues, greens, yellows, and pinks that draw the eye toward the sides and center. The overlapping brushstrokes retain a spontaneous appearance, while the black outlines structure and sharpen the tension in the patches of color. The eye moves diagonally along the angular stroke, pauses at the rounded groupings, then shifts again across the undulations, small circular spots, and elongated forms in the lower area. With no dominant illusionistic depth, the interest arises from the interplay of layers, signs, rhythms, and chromatic weights across a single surface.

In this work by Wassily Kandinsky, abstract language takes shape through expressive color, line, rhythm, and nonrepresentational forms. A concrete allusion is transformed into an autonomous visual structure: the horses remain within the realm of the title, while the surface conveys their energy through diagonals, clashes of color, and calligraphic gestures. The dialogue between the two groupings at the sides and the black stroke that passes through them concentrates the tension between organic expansion and direction. The result is an improvisation understood as pictorial movement, in which every patch contributes to a lively, deliberately open composition.
