Description

The painting depicts an intimate, suspended scene in a lush garden beside a body of water. At the center, an adult woman rests on her side on a low structure covered with fabrics, her torso bare and her body partly wrapped in a light-colored sheet. Behind her, a man leans forward, dressed in luminous garments with a reddish cloth over his head and shoulder. The fabrics spread around the bed, forming folds that connect the figures to the foreground. Broad leaves, branches, red flowers, and dense shadows enclose the scene, creating a natural refuge.

Rather than depicting an identifiable historical, religious, or mythological episode, Daydreaming unfolds as a poetic scene of intimacy and reverie. The figures’ closeness suggests a relationship absorbed in the moment, while the secluded garden sets them apart from everyday life. The woman’s relaxed pose and the man’s forward lean create a small narrative focal point, though the painting keeps the gesture and situation deliberately open-ended. The title directs the viewer toward a daydream: it describes not a specific action, but a state of absorption, sensuality, and suspended time.

The natural setting plays an essential role in this interpretation. The water in the foreground introduces a calm, reflective surface that visually extends the silence of the scene, while the surrounding foliage serves as both boundary and protection. The light-colored fabrics focus attention on the woman’s bodily vulnerability and lend a sensuality tempered by the delicacy of their folds. In contrast, the red flowers and patches of dark vegetation heighten the interplay of exuberance, desire, and seclusion. The image does not separate nature from the figures: the garden seems to absorb the characters’ intimacy and transform it into an almost unreal experience.

Formally, the horizontal composition is organized around a diagonal axis formed by the two bodies and the low platform. The woman creates an extended, restful line, while the man introduces an inclined direction that animates the center of the work. The cream, ivory, and pale pink tones of the fabrics and skin stand out against the olive greens and blacks of the background, guiding the eye toward the meeting of the figures. The blue-gray of the bed and water creates a chromatic transition between the central group and the foreground. The masses of leaves create depth through layering, while the folds add an undulating rhythm that softens the tension of the scene.

In Paul Merwart’s work, attention here is drawn to the visible construction of an enveloping image: illuminated bodies, tactile fabrics, and vegetation that serves simultaneously as frame, setting, and atmosphere. The painting combines a drawing attentive to the figures’ poses with a chromatic richness based on contrasts between light and shadow, stillness and movement, intimacy and exuberance. It is worth observing how the raised cloth beside the man extends the central diagonal, and how the fabrics in the foreground lead the eye toward the water. Along this path, the title takes on its full force: the scene seems to suspend time, portraying not a literal dream, but the moment when consciousness gives itself over to daydreaming.
