Description

David with the Head of Goliath presents a half-length young man with a bare torso and a wavy brown mane, emerging from a dark background. He turns his head sharply to the left, his eyes wide open and his lips parted, as if something has just caught his attention. With his right hand, raised to shoulder height, he holds a mass of dark hair and an animal skin that falls over the right edge of the painting. Brown drapery and a shadowy landscape can be made out around him.

The subject comes from the biblical account in the Book of Samuel, in which the young shepherd David defeats the Philistine giant Goliath with a sling and then cuts off his head. It was one of the Baroque period’s favorite subjects, used to show the triumph of faith and cunning over brute force. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, known above all as a sculptor and architect, also practiced painting, and in this work he depicts a figure to whom he also devoted one of his most celebrated sculptures.

Far from the image of a serene, triumphant hero, Bernini’s David appears tense and alert, as if still reeling from the fight. His expression conveys astonishment and vigilance rather than pride, humanizing the figure and emphasizing his youth. The shepherd’s animal skin hanging beside his hand recalls his humble origins, while his gesture of holding the trophy alludes to the victory of the weak over the powerful.

The composition is built around a sharp twist of the body: the shoulders face one way and the head another, creating a dynamic tension characteristic of the Baroque. Intense light from the left illuminates the shoulder, chest, and face, setting them in strong relief against the dim background. The palette, limited to flesh tones, ochres, browns, and blacks, heightens the drama of the chiaroscuro and focuses all attention on the figure.

This painting reveals Bernini’s sculptor’s eye: the modelling of the torso has an almost marble-like solidity, while the expression on the face captures a fleeting moment with great naturalness. Our hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas faithfully renders the interplay of light and shadow, the softness of the flesh tones, and the energy of the gesture, preserving the theatrical intensity of this work by the master of the Roman Baroque.
