Burgundy, red and orange fabrics wrap around several figures and visually link their bodies. A bare tree cuts its branches against the sky, and the shadowy areas between the rocks heighten the sense of precarious shelter.
The subject refers to the episode of the Deluge recounted in Genesis, when a flood destroys the corrupt world and Noah, his family and the animals are preserved in the ark. The dark masses of the landscape contain the composition and make the pale skin of the bodies stand out. The warm-toned fabrics serve as centers of chromatic rhythm: they interrupt the earthy continuity of the background and link the different areas of the composition.
