Description

The painting presents a dense, theatrical ancient scene in which a crowd gathers around a large white bull. The animal occupies the lower center and draws attention amid men who are seated, kneeling, or bending, dressed in armor, helmets, feathered headdresses, and ceremonial garments. On the left, a monumental figure in shadow stands beside an ornate structure, while trees, stone buildings, columns, staircases, and a sculpted relief appear in the background. A small suspended figure above the architecture introduces a supernatural note into the scene.

The title refers to the Christian tradition of the fall of Simon Magus, the magician from Samaria mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. According to later legend, Simon attempted to demonstrate supernatural powers by rising into the air, but fell when Saint Peter’s prayer caused his feat to fail. The episode contrasts the ostentation of magical power with apostolic authority. The crowd and monumental architecture place this confrontation in a public setting, as an extraordinary event witnessed by an entire community.

The small winged or suspended figure above the buildings alludes to the attempted ascent and the fall that gives the work its name. The pale bull serves as the composition’s great ritual and visual focus: its presence evokes a ceremony or sacrifice and broadens the narrative into a more extensive recreation of antiquity. This is not merely a narrative backdrop, but a scene in which the supernatural, ceremonial splendor, and collective anticipation converge around an animal of almost monumental scale. The varied postures of the onlookers form a chain of gazes, gestures, and reactions to the prodigy.

The horizontal composition is structured around a pronounced contrast in scale. The bull dominates the foreground, the crowd recedes behind its body, and the eye rises toward the central tree, the suspended figure, and the illuminated building on the right. Browns, ochres, and sepias compress the space, offset by the animal’s creamy white, the bluish grays of some garments, and subtle reddish accents. The dark masses at the far left balance the light architecture in the background, while warm lighting picks out bodies, stones, and reliefs. The result is a crowded, solemn, theatrical visual rhythm.

The work is associated with the well-known predilection of Leonaert Bramer for historical and biblical scenes set in antiquity, crowded throngs, and dramatic effects of light and color. Here, his interests unfold in a vision in which the religious episode takes on the scale of an urban spectacle: the bull establishes the material center, the architecture evokes memory and authority, and the suspended figure concentrates the legendary dimension. The painting’s strength lies in this layering of planes, from the earthly ceremony to the supernatural failure looming over it.
