Description

The painting depicts a lush still life in which flowers, foliage, fruit and birds come together in a dense vertical composition with a striking decorative effect. A lavish bouquet unfolds across the upper part, dominated by pink and white flowers alongside touches of red, yellow, violet and blue. In the lower center, two blue-plumaged birds face in opposite directions, bringing a lively presence to the composition. Round fruit, small berries and a tray of cut fruit appear around them in the lower-right corner. Everything rests on a surface rendered with multicolored brushstrokes.

As a genre, still life depends not on a historical or religious narrative, but on the visual arrangement of objects and natural elements within an independent pictorial space. Here, the arrangement of flowers, birds and fruit transforms an everyday scene into a celebration of abundance and sensory variety. The animals bring a note of life and movement to a genre traditionally associated with motionless objects, while the whole and cut fruit deepen the relationship between nature and the objects arranged on the table. Sigrid Hjertén’s work thus focuses on the experience of color and the composition’s energy.

The profusion of flowers can be read as an expression of vitality and sensory fullness, without assigning a separate meaning to each species. The two blue birds serve as an organic counterpoint within the mass of foliage: their bodies and profiles interrupt the rhythm of petals and leaves, drawing the eye toward the lower area. The combination of whole and cut fruit adds variety in color, texture and substance, revealing both the food’s outer surface and its juicy interior. Together, these elements transform the still life into a scene of exuberance, where nature appears both carefully arranged and overflowing.

The composition is completely filled with forms and brushstrokes, leaving barely any empty space for the eye to rest. The large flowers establish the first focal point in the upper half; then the green, turquoise, and bluish foliage guides the eye toward the birds and fruit. The contrast between the deep blues of the birds and the pinks, reds, yellows, and whites of the flowers creates a continuous chromatic vibration. The visible brushwork does more than describe the objects: it also builds the background and the supporting surface, unifying the entire scene through broad gestures, flexible contours, and color transitions. Depth arises more from overlapping forms and rhythm than from conventional spatial illusion.

The intense use of color, gestural energy, and decorative construction of a densely populated space link this work to the modernist and expressionist tendencies associated with Sigrid Hjertén. Its strength lies not only in recognizing flowers, fruit, or birds, but also in observing how these motifs come together on a vibrant painted surface. It is worth following the work from the flowers above to the tray below: the eye moves from the bouquet’s vertical sweep to the concentration of the birds, ending with the material presence of the cut fruit. This progression reveals that the still-life subject and the arrangement of color are inseparable.
