Description
The painting shows Susanna and the elders in a monumental garden, beside a stone fountain and a pond. The young woman occupies the center of the composition, seated on the balustrade with her torso partially exposed, wrapped in a white cloth and wearing a voluminous blue skirt. Facing her, two older, bearded men lean over her figure: one holds part of the cloth, while the other, draped in a red cloak, extends his arm and points to the left. The fountain’s vertical jet balances the scene on the opposite side, amid leafy trees, water, steps, and classical architecture visible in the background.
The episode comes from the biblical story of Susanna, presented as a virtuous woman surprised by two elders while bathing. They try to take advantage of her vulnerability and, when she rejects them, turn their frustrated desire into a false accusation of adultery. The story thus frames a conflict between the protagonist’s integrity and the abuse of authority by those who watch her. Its resolution is linked to Daniel, who exposes the contradiction in the testimonies and restores the truth. The painted scene captures the moment of greatest tension, before the accusation receives a just response.
The fountain, the water, and the removed cloth serve as immediate signs of bathing, but also heighten Susanna’s exposure to an intrusive gaze. The elders’ physical proximity contrasts with the woman’s vulnerable position, her body extending in an open diagonal across the stone. The pointing gesture of the figure dressed in red evokes the verbal pressure and accusation that will dominate the story. Far from offering refuge, the surrounding vegetation turns the garden into a place of surveillance: the beauty of the setting coexists with the violation of privacy and the threat of false authority.
The horizontal, theatrical composition clearly guides the viewer’s gaze. The diagonal formed by Susanna’s body leads from the center toward the foreground, while the arm of the elder in red creates a second line of force, descending toward her. The fountain provides a vertical counterbalance on the left and adds a circular rhythm through its basin and water. The deep blue of the skirt and the crimson red of the mantle draw attention to the figures, setting them apart against the garden’s dark greens and the stone’s warm grays. The lighting highlights the bodies and fabrics, while the shaded background deepens the sense of an enclosed setting charged with tension.
In Susanna and the Elders, Pompeo Batoni combines elegant draftsmanship and idealized figures—features consistent with his late Baroque and Neoclassical style—with a highly dramatic mise-en-scène. The refined surfaces of the fabric, stone, and skin soften the depiction, but the leaning gestures and concentrated gazes preserve the unease of the episode. The chromatic and architectural harmony does not soothe the conflict; instead, it makes it more visible: the garden’s ordered beauty frames a situation of abuse, surveillance, and false authority.
