Description

The painting shows Christ and his disciples gathered around a large table in a spacious interior, structured by arches, leaded windows, and a staircase along one side. The figures are grouped on several planes: some lean over the tablecloth, others converse or reach for the food, while two figures seen from behind draw the viewer closer to the heart of the gathering. On the table are a large circular platter, round loaves, plates, bowls, metal jugs, and utensils. Red, green, ochre, black, and brown tunics and cloaks form a varied ensemble, unified by the way all the gestures focus on the meal.

The scene depicts the final meal Christ shares with his disciples before the Passion. In Christian tradition, the Last Supper is associated with the institution of the Eucharist and belongs to the narrative cycle leading to the Crucifixion. Here, the episode is presented as a lively, densely populated gathering, closer to a moment of intense exchange than to a motionless ceremonial arrangement. The bread and vessels on the table underscore the communal and sacramental dimensions of the scene, while the architectural setting transforms an everyday room into a space of religious significance.

The objects carry much of the visual meaning. The white tablecloth creates a luminous surface against which the loaves, central platter, and vessels stand out, evoking the shared meal and its ritual dimension. The large circular platter also serves as a compositional center, drawing together the diners’ gazes and movements. The leaning figures, outstretched hands, and overlapping conversations suggest the intensity of the moment among the disciples. Rather than isolating a single figure through one defining gesture, the work builds meaning through a web of relationships: every figure takes part in the scene and directs attention back to the table.

The vertical composition is organized around a table set on a diagonal, leading from the foreground to the group in the background. This diagonal creates movement and prevents the gathering from appearing as a static band. The figures along the lower edge, seen partly from behind, create depth and place the viewer within the space of the supper. By contrast, the arches and windows structure the background with firm architectural lines, while the dark areas of stone or wood make the faces, tablecloth, and metal objects stand out. Warm light is concentrated on the main narrative elements; the reds and greens of the garments add chromatic rhythm amid the dominant browns, ochres, and blacks.

Attributed to the Master of the Virgo inter Virgines, the work is associated with late Gothic Netherlandish devotional painting for its meticulous attention to interiors, textiles, and objects, as well as its taste for narratives filled with details. The scene turns the Last Supper into an image of sacred fellowship: faith is expressed not only through a central figure, but also through the table that brings everyone together, the gestures connecting the figures, and the architecture that contains the episode. When viewing it, follow the diagonal path of the tablecloth to the central platter and observe how each loaf, jug, and movement of the hands extends the gathering’s narrative tension.
