Description

The painting presents a horizontal still life of pomegranates, grapes and foliage arranged on a light-colored ledge. Three pomegranates occupy the foreground: one, open on the left, reveals its red seeds; another dominates the center, its interior exposed; and a third blends in among the leaves on the right. Behind them, a cluster of grapes brings together shades of green, ochre and reddish brown. The branches extend laterally, forming an organic frame around the fruit. In contrast, the dark background, rendered in muted browns, reds and greens, focuses attention on the luminosity and texture of the plant life.

The title, Still Life. Study for Clytie, connects the composition with a mythological reference without turning it into a narrative scene. In classical tradition, Clytie is a figure associated with her love for Helios, toward whom she remains oriented. The story includes her transformation into a plant, associated in the most widely known versions with the heliotrope or sunflower. Here, the reference serves as a framework for interpretation: no figure appears; instead, the painting is a concentrated study of fruit, leaves, light and painterly material. The allusion broadens the still life’s scope without diminishing its visual autonomy.

The opened pomegranates suggest abundance, fertility and chromatic richness, while also offering an extraordinary variety of surfaces: smooth skin, pale membranes and gleaming seeds. The grapes extend the still life’s traditional association with fertility and the sensuality of organic forms. The foliage links each element, turning the accumulation of objects into a living, enveloping structure. The light-colored ledge provides a stable base for this vegetal growth, while the dark background heightens the contrast between what is concealed and what is exposed, between the depth of the space behind and the luminous revelation of the opened fruit.

The composition is arranged around a compact central band, balanced by branches extending to either side. The pomegranates establish a rhythm of rounded volumes and diagonal cuts; behind them, the cluster of grapes introduces a smaller, repeated pattern. The lighting is concentrated on the front-facing surfaces, especially the seeds and the changes in color across the rinds, guiding the eye from the foreground to the cluster and back to the outline of the leaves. The looser, more vertical brushstrokes in the background contrast with the descriptive attention devoted to the fruit and create depth without relying on complex perspective.

The work is associated with Frederic Leighton’s Victorian academic painting, with its refined drawing, controlled compositions, and affinity for classical and mythological subjects. In this still life, that sensibility is expressed through the carefully balanced arrangement of forms and the rich color of an everyday subject. The result brings together the intimacy of the genre and the resonance of Clytie: the fruit, leaves, and light turn the mythological reference into a visual meditation on plant matter. Each pomegranate serves at once as a tangible object, a focal point of color, and a symbolic center within the composition’s quiet architecture.
