Description

The painting depicts a stylized landscape in which a red tree occupies the center of the composition, rising from undulating terrain toward the top of the picture. Its shape is elongated, irregular and organic, with a reddish-brown core and pinkish and whitish bands running along its edges, like a structure built from layers of color. A luminous, almost uniform yellow-green field stretches around it, interrupted by a low horizon line and subtle tonal variations. In the upper left, an isolated dark circle introduces the reference to the sun. The landscape contains no human figures, focusing all its presence on the relationship between the vertical tree, the open space and the soft bands of terrain.

Rather than depicting a specific place, the work presents a concentrated vision of nature. The landscape is reduced to its essential elements: a tree-like form, a horizon, undulating ground and a celestial sign. This synthesis connects the painting with a modern tradition that transforms the observation of the natural world into a refined visual structure. The red tree and the sun take center stage in an elemental, almost emblematic scene. The open terrain places the central motif in a broad natural space, while the scarcity of secondary details directs attention to the energy of the forms and the intensity of the colors.

The tree serves as an organic axis connecting the earth to the celestial space and dividing the landscape into two lateral fields. Its reddish coloring introduces warm intensity against the greenish-yellow background, making the form stand out boldly beyond its outline. The small sun, reduced to a circular shape, acts as a counterpoint in the upper part of the composition and balances the trunk’s vertical weight. The horizontal bands of terrain reinforce the tree’s place within an open landscape and establish a serene rhythm that contrasts with its upward rise. Overall, the scene distills nature into an essentialized image in which each element has a clear role within the overall harmony.

The composition is organized around an opposition between verticality and horizontality. The tree dominates the central axis and first draws the eye with its scale, irregular outline, and contrast of reds, browns, and pinks. On either side, the greenish-yellow background acts as an expansive surface that amplifies its silhouette. Lower down, the low horizon and undulating layers of beige, olive green, and brown introduce depth without resorting to detailed perspective. The overlapping bands of color create a compressed, tactile appearance. The light is diffuse: rather than modeling the forms with strong shadows, it keeps the scene in a state of even, slightly surreal clarity.

In the context of Arthur Dove’s career, this work reflects a modernist approach to transforming natural elements into organic forms, expressive colors, and synthetic visual compositions without abandoning its reference to the landscape. It does not need to describe every leaf, contour, or distance to evoke the experience of an open space; instead, it concentrates its main forces in the tree, the sun, and the terrain. The central motif acts simultaneously as a tree, a column of color, and a compositional structure: it orders the horizon, divides the field, and directs the gaze upward. Thus, Red Tree and Sun it turns a simple landscape into an image of great visual concentration, in which nature is perceived both as an environment and as a language of forms and colors.
