Description

The painting presents a vertical abstract composition organized around a powerful diagonal that crosses the ivory background from the upper-left area to the lower-right. In the upper-right, a large black circle draws the eye and is connected to colorful rays, segments, and lines radiating around it. Beneath this structure are blue, gray, pink, and red polygonal masses, along with squares, rectangles, and small fragments distributed across the surface. A gridded panel of multicolored squares occupies the lower central area, surrounded by white forms and speckled patches that create an irregular visual texture.

Two Black Spots does not depict a figurative scene or a recognizable narrative in the traditional sense. Its subject belongs to the language of geometric abstraction, where interest shifts from the representation of objects to the relationships between lines, planes, colors, rhythms, and visual weight. The title draws the eye to the recurring presence of black within a construction full of contrasts. The work can be viewed as an autonomous field of forces, in which the forms need not describe a landscape, a figure, or an event to establish spatial and emotional relationships. Each fragment contributes to a visual arrangement that combines order, layering, and tension.

The large black circle functions as a gravitational focus within the composition. Its density contrasts with the red, orange, and yellow accents around it, while its radial extensions suggest expansion, vibration, or contained energy. The diagonal bands and black lines reinforce a sense of movement and direction, as if the pictorial field were crossed by simultaneous trajectories. Against these dark masses, the multicolored geometric fragments introduce pauses and counterpoints. The lower panel, with its small divisions, adds a sense of rhythm and subdivision that balances the breadth of the larger forms without turning them into identifiable objects.

The compositional structure depends on superimposition. The gray and dark bands intersect with blue, pink, and red planes, creating depth through layers rather than perspective. The ivory background allows the contours to stand out and acts as a breathing space between concentrations of color. Curved and straight lines direct the eye in several directions, preventing the black circle from completely monopolizing the reading. There is a constant alternation between compact forms and small scattered signs, between smooth surfaces and speckled patches. This contrast creates a fragmented rhythm, held together by the dominant diagonal that unifies the composition.

The work displays traits widely associated with Wassily Kandinsky: non-figurative abstraction, the expressive autonomy of color and form, and a composition built around lines, geometric shapes, and color contrasts. In this context, Two Black Spots turns the dark focal points into points of tension within a dynamic system of weights and counterpoints. It is worth observing how the upper-right circle interacts with the small black marks, diagonal bands, and lower grid: the meaning lies not in any single element, but in the movement of the eye between them. The painting rests precisely on this unstable balance between geometric structure, chromatic impulse, and visual movement.
