Description

The painting depicts Pomona as a female figure in profile, facing right and set within a lush garden. Her head, crowned by a mass of gathered hair in shades of brown, ochre and gold, is silhouetted in the upper left. A light-colored surface wraps around her torso and descends toward the bottom, while the foliage gradually fills the space, becoming concentrated along the right edge. Rounded orange forms appear among the leaves and stems, along with small clusters of flowers that enrich the scene. A tiny winged form animates the background without drawing attention away from the relationship between the figure and the vegetation.

In Roman mythology, Pomona is the divinity associated with fruit trees, orchards and the cultivation of fruit. Her presence here is not that of a conventional individual portrait, but rather a personification of cultivated fertility and natural abundance. The garden is her natural domain: a space where the earth, plants and ripening fruit become attributes of her identity. The association with pomum, a Latin term related to fruit, reinforces the fruit-bearing dimension of the name and the overall visual composition.

The density of leaves, flowers and fruit creates an iconography of prosperity and growth. The orange forms, suspended among the green and yellow, serve as accents of ripeness and bring a warm energy to the composition. Pomona seems to emerge from the very garden that surrounds her: her hair, the light-colored surface and the contours of her body relate to the movement of the vegetative brushstrokes, so that the figure ceases to be an isolated presence. The small winged form contributes to the vitality of the setting, as part of a garden inhabited by minute, spontaneous movements.

The vertical composition establishes a clear visual path. The head occupies the upper-left third and serves as the first focal point; from there, the profile leads the eye to the right, while the body and light-colored garment draw it back toward the mass of vegetation below. The creamy yellow background opens up the scene and allows the blue brushstrokes to serve as a visual counterpoint. Greens, ochres, golds, browns, and oranges intertwine across a vibrant surface, where visible brushwork takes the place of rigid outlines. The contrast between the luminous areas and the denser foliage creates depth without relying on defined architecture: space is organized through layers of color, density, and rhythm.

The work is connected to Childe Hassam’s Impressionist style through its luminous treatment of color, the active presence of brushwork, and the integration of the figure with a garden landscape. The contrasts between yellows and blues make the scene feel airy, while the warm tones of the figure and fruit hold the composition together. Notice how Pomona does not dominate the garden from the outside: her identity takes shape within it, through the continuity between body, foliage, and atmosphere. This fusion turns the mythological subject into a sensory experience of abundance and light.
