Description

The painting depicts a nude female figure standing in shallow water, her body turned slightly and her head inclined downward. Her brown hair, gathered in a low bun, clearly defines her profile and focuses her expression in a gesture of serene contemplation. One arm hangs alongside her torso, while the other extends gently to the right, with her hand open. The water surrounds her lower legs and returns a diffuse pink and violet reflection, extending the presence of her body across the surface. In the background, a low strip of land or vegetation separates the water from a broad, luminous sky.

In In the Water does not depict an identifiable historical, religious or mythological episode. The painting belongs to the figurative landscape scene: an isolated, contemplative and silent human presence in direct relation to an open natural setting. The title focuses attention on this spatial relationship. The figure does not simply appear beside the water but is immersed in it up to her legs, so the landscape actively contributes to defining her posture, scale and mood. The simplicity of the subject allows the visual experience to rest on the body, the light and the breadth of the horizon.

The water and its reflection introduce a sense of stillness and contemplation. The reflected image does not reproduce the body precisely but dissolves it into patches of color, as if the figure’s identity both extended into and merged with the landscape. Her nudity visually connects the body with nature and shifts attention to posture, balance and lighting, without imposing a specific narrative. The clear sky and open horizon reinforce a sense of quiet space. Her outstretched arms establish a horizontal relationship with the surroundings, while the inclination of her head preserves an intimate, reflective note.

The vertical composition gives the figure a commanding presence, while its slightly off-center position to the left avoids rigid symmetry. The body forms a gentle diagonal from the inclined head to the arms, set against the stable horizontality of the horizon and the ripples on the water. White, pale blue, lavender gray, and light pink create a luminous, ethereal palette; the pinkish tones in the reflection blend the figure chromatically into its surroundings. The broad, open expanses of sky and water serve as visual pauses, while the outline guides the eye from the face to the hands, the submerged legs, and their reflected extension.

The connection to Eugene De Blaas can be seen in the attention to the human figure, the elegant finish, and the clarity of the drawing—qualities associated with his academic figurative painting. Here, that precision coexists with an atmospheric treatment of the sky and water, softening the contours of the surroundings without diminishing the definition of the central figure. The work turns an apparently simple scene into a study of the relationship between body, reflection, and light. Notice how the figure remains steady and upright while its reflection becomes fluid and indistinct: this difference creates the painting’s most subtle tension, between the body’s tangible presence and the landscape’s changing serenity.
