Description

The painting depicts Saint Jerome in retreat in an open landscape, seated beside a large tree with a gnarled trunk and exposed roots. His bearded figure, dressed in white, leans toward the tree as one arm reaches across its trunk. At his feet rests a large-maned lion, calm and watchful, and an open book appears between them. To the right, the landscape unfolds across fields, winding paths, fences and wooded hills; a small horse adds a sense of distance to the scene. The dead tree in the background and the broad expanse of sky complete this secluded, contemplative rural setting.

The work depicts Saint Jerome in the solitude of his retreat, a devotional image associated with his life of penance, prayer and study of the Scriptures. Here, “wilderness” should be understood as a place of spiritual seclusion: the setting is not barren, but fertile and quiet, far from urban life. The open book presents the saint as a scholar and translator, while the lion immediately identifies him within the Christian tradition. As a Church Father, Saint Jerome embodies the union of ascetic discipline and knowledge, two dimensions that the painting brings together in a scene of apparent stillness.

The attributes are not shown in isolation, but are woven into a visual narrative about contemplation. The lion, close to the saint and almost human in scale because of its relaxed pose, turns the wild into a companion rather than a threat. The open book creates a space for intellectual concentration beneath the tree’s shade, while the horizon draws the eye across a succession of fields and hills. The separation between the foreground and the distant world can be read as an image of retreat: the saint remains still, even as the landscape continues to stretch beyond him. The contrast between the living tree, the bare trunk and the white-clad figure also suggests permanence, austerity and the passage of time.

The vertical composition is organized around the dominant tree trunk, whose slant creates a powerful line descending toward Saint Jerome and the book. This structure first focuses attention on the saint’s gesture, then shifts it to the lion, positioned on the right as a visual counterweight. The reddish browns and olive greens in the foreground connect with the ochres of the fields, while the pale blue sky opens up the upper portion and lightens the dense earth tones. Perspective unfolds in layers: roots and animals in the foreground, fences and a horse in the middle distance, and hills beneath a luminous horizon. The stillness of the figures contrasts with the winding rhythm of the paths.

In Giovanni Bellini’s work, this integration of devotional figure and landscape reflects a Venetian Renaissance sensibility attuned to atmospheric light and warm gradations of color. Here, nature is not merely a backdrop but a visual extension of spiritual experience: the space expands as the figure becomes absorbed in reading and prayer. Notice how the white garment, the book, and the lion’s mane form a bright focal point amid the dark, golden earth. From this center, the eye travels across the tree, follows the paths, and returns to the saint, understanding Saint Jerome’s retreat as a meditation shaped both by its symbols and by the landscape’s serene structure.
