Description

The painting depicts two nuns from Port-Royal in the austere interior of a convent community. One stands on the left, her hands clasped in prayer; the other sits on the right, her hands resting on a small decorated red object. Both wear pale habits, black veils, and large red crosses that stand out against the sobriety of the composition. A string of beads hangs beside the waist of the standing figure, while the chairs and wooden structures define the lower area. On the left wall, an extensive dark inscription introduces a written presence as important as that of the figures themselves.

The title Ex-Voto refers to an image made to fulfill a vow or give thanks for a grace received. The work is associated with the Port-Royal community and the miraculous healing of a nun. The convent interior, the nuns’ solemn demeanor, and the text on the wall present the scene as a record of divine intervention. The painting does more than depict two women gathered together: it visually records an event of faith within the community and preserves its memory through the image.

The red crosses serve as immediate signs of religious affiliation and draw attention to the chest of each habit. Their repetition creates a visual bond between the two figures, despite their different postures: the standing nun embodies concentrated prayer, while the seated figure adds a narrative, testimonial dimension. The inscription extends the meaning of the scene beyond the gestures and turns the wall into a repository of memory. The wooden floor, simple furnishings, and bare walls reinforce an atmosphere of discipline, silence, and contemplation. The small red object adds a point of color and human closeness amid the overall solemnity.

The horizontal composition is organized around a balance between verticality and repose. The figure on the left rises above and dominates the center of the painting, while the seated nun establishes a lower counterweight on the right. The broad ivory folds of the habits form curved masses that extend toward the floor, contrasting with the dark outlines of the veils, chairs, and wall. The restrained palette of ivory, brown, black, and ochre is interrupted by the red of the crosses and the object, so that color serves as a visual guide. The inscription concentrates detail in the lower-left background and draws the eye between the text, the faces, and the hands.

The devotional austerity, precise draftsmanship, and restrained composition connect this work with the qualities widely associated with Philippe de Champaigne. The painting needs no grand gestures to convey its religious dimension: the stillness of the interior and the economy of its elements make every sign part of a visual document of faith. The crosses link the two women, while the inscription transforms the room into a space of remembrance. Between the praying figure, the witnessing figure, and the text that preserves the event, Ex-Voto it constructs a silent image in which devotion becomes a story.
