Description

The painting shows the prophet Isaiah seated inside a stone architectural niche, in a vertical composition that focuses all attention on his presence. The figure occupies almost the entire central space: he wears a voluminous golden tunic covered by a mantle in shades of blue, red and dark tones, and a wide-brimmed hat that reinforces his historical, monumental appearance. With his right arm extended, he points toward the right side of the scene; in his left hand, he holds a light-colored tablet bearing the words «ECCE DEUS SALVATOR MEUS». The stone steps and blocks at the base complete the architectural setting, while the dark background draws attention to his face, hands and the luminous folds of his garments.

The inscription can be translated as «Behold God, my savior» and comes from Isaiah 12:2, a phrase that encapsulates the scene’s hopeful core. Isaiah holds a central place among the prophets of the Hebrew and Christian traditions, and his book combines warnings, comfort and promises of salvation. Here, he appears not simply as an isolated figure, but as a herald: his words are embodied in the tablet, and his gesture directs that message beyond the niche, as if offering it directly to the viewer. His seated posture adds a dimension of reflective authority, balancing the energy of his outstretched arm.

The tablet serves as the textual attribute identifying the work’s spiritual content, making the writing a visible part of the image. The finger pointing to the right extends the reading of the inscription and establishes a line of communication between the prophet, the space beyond, and the viewer. The stone architecture lends stability and solemnity, as though Isaiah were integrated into a lasting structure of religious memory. The gold of the tunic enhances the figure’s dignity, while the blues, reds, and blacks of the mantle introduce contrasts that distinguish the different areas of the body and enrich the way the drapery is read.

The formal construction depends on a carefully calibrated tension between verticality and movement. The niche’s straight sides and stepped base anchor the scene, while the diagonals of the folds and the arm’s horizontal direction lead the eye toward the tablet. Warm light falls on the face, torso, and hands, which become the main points of focus; around them, the dark background compresses the depth and gives the figure an almost sculptural presence. The ochres and yellows of the tunic dominate the surface with a rhythm of broad folds, while the cool, dark tones of the mantle serve as a visual counterpoint.

In this work, Fra Bartolomeo brings together a monumental figure, a clear composition, and richly rendered drapery—qualities associated with his religious painting. The prophet thus takes on a steadfast, devotional presence: the message is inseparable from the physicality of the one proclaiming it and from the setting that supports him. Notice how the pointing hand, the inscription, and the glow of the tunic form a single visual direction. Within this ensemble, Isaiah appears as a figure proclaiming a message, whose biblical words are transformed into gesture, color, and architecture.
