Description

Fra Angelico’s painting presents Saint Jerome in penance as a full-length, frontal, upright figure. The saint appears barefoot on earthy ground, dressed in a long robe in gray-green and brown tones. His dark beard and hair frame a face turned upward, while his right hand rests on his chest in a gesture of contemplation. A narrow scroll hangs beside him, unfurled and bearing several lines of writing. A reddish-gold circular halo surrounds his head, and the background stretches across a warm surface of ochres, reds, and ornamental strokes. On either side, dark masses of vegetation frame the figure; in the lower band, plants and small organic forms surround his feet.

The scene brings together the essential attributes of Saint Jerome as a hermit saint, penitent, and scholar of Scripture. Christian tradition associates him with the translation, interpretation, and transmission of biblical texts, a dimension made tangible here by the written scroll. The austere landscape places the figure far from everyday life and inhabited spaces, in a realm of retreat, prayer, and spiritual discipline. Rather than narrating a specific episode, the work focuses attention on a state of meditation: Saint Jerome remains isolated, sustained by the written word and by a practice of material renunciation.

The halo immediately identifies the sacred register of the depiction, while the bare feet and rough ground intensify the sense of humility and penance. The gesture of bringing a hand to the chest introduces an intimate note within the figure’s solemn frontality. The scroll serves both as an intellectual attribute and as a visual extension of his contemplative life: spiritual experience is articulated through reading, writing, and reflection. The restrained vegetation and small forms in the foreground do not distract from the saint; on the contrary, they underscore the austerity of the surroundings and create a symbolic separation between inner life and the outside world.

The composition is organized around the central figure with clear symmetry. The halo draws the eye to the upper area, from where attention descends along the robe to the feet, following the figure’s vertical axis. The scroll shifts the balance slightly to the right and adds a descending line that contrasts with the saint’s frontal stability. The golden and reddish background, with its textured, almost flat surface, eliminates any pronounced naturalistic depth and turns the space into a symbolic field. Against this warm luminosity, the dark shrubs, grayish ground, and plants in the foreground establish a contrasting rhythm that makes the silhouette stand out.

The work thus creates an archaic, contemplative image through its combination of frontal composition, earthy colors, and recognizable signs of holiness. Saint Jerome’s dominant scale makes him the absolute center of the visual experience, while the scroll and landscape complete his identity: he is not merely a solitary ascetic, but also a man of learning and words. It is worth noting how the radiance of the halo and background does not soften the austerity of the scene, but transforms it into a concentrated spiritual presence. The expressive power of this Saint Jerome in Penitence lies in the tension between the barefoot body, earth, writing, and gold.
