Description
Old Woman Praying depicts a half-length elderly woman in profile, her hands clasped in prayer over a wooden table. A black-beaded rosary passes between her fingers and hangs over the tabletop. Her deeply wrinkled face is turned to the left, where a candle concealed behind a wooden structure, perhaps a lectern or screen, casts an intense, warm light. She wears a brown garment with a fur lining, sleeves trimmed in red and blue, and a light-colored headscarf. The background is completely dark.
The scene belongs to devotional genre painting, which was highly regarded in the 17th century. Matthias Stom, a painter from the Netherlands who spent much of his career in Italy, was one of Caravaggio’s followers who was particularly drawn to scenes illuminated by artificial light, in the tradition of the Utrecht Caravaggisti. Elderly figures praying or reading by candlelight were among his favorite subjects.
The elderly woman embodies simple piety and meditation at the end of life. The rosary signifies repeated, constant prayer, while the candle, a source of light in the darkness, can be read as an image of faith that illuminates, as well as of the fleeting nature of existence. The aged face, rendered without idealization, conveys serenity and contemplation.
The composition is built on a strong contrast of light and shadow: the candle, hidden from the viewer, fully illuminates the profile, hands, and rosary, while the rest of the figure fades into the gloom. The wooden structure on the left forms a diagonal that frames the light source. The palette is warm, with ochres, browns, and golds enlivened by touches of red and blue on the sleeves.
Stom is renowned for the meticulous realism of the skin and hands and for the dramatic artificial light, indebted to Caravaggio. Our hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas preserves this intense chiaroscuro, the candle’s golden glow, and the texture of every wrinkle on the face.
