Description

The painting depicts a still life dominated by three fish arranged on a sloping wooden surface. Their silver, blue and pink bodies fill the foreground and establish the composition’s material center from the outset. Around them are red and pale fruits, elongated vegetables, green produce, a tall dark green bottle and two low vessels decorated with floral motifs. Boxes, planks and saucers complete this array of household items, while a mass of leaves and plant forms darkens the background. The food is not isolated, but layered and closely grouped, as if the table extended into the surrounding vegetation.

The title Fish places the work within the tradition of still life, a genre that turns food and everyday objects into subjects for pictorial contemplation. Here, the fish guide the viewer’s reading of a broader arrangement: fruit, vegetables, vessels and boxes create a scene of provisions and abundance, without human figures or a narrative action to divert attention. The presence of utilitarian objects alongside ornamental cups connects the domestic with the decorative. Rather than telling an episode, the painting presents a world concentrated in its textures, colors and spatial relationships.

The displayed fish can be read as food and as a sign of material abundance. Their size and frontal position give them an almost theatrical presence, reinforced by the sheen of their scales and the weight of their bodies on the wood. The fruits and vegetables heighten this impression of fertility and provision, while the boxes and work surfaces evoke the movement of produce through everyday life. The floral cups introduce an ornamental counterpoint: alongside the fresh food and rough wood, they add a delicate, domestic note. The dark, leafy background focuses attention on the illuminated elements and turns abundance into a scene of intense visual density.

The composition rises from the fish in the foreground toward a compact arrangement of fruits, vegetables, containers, and leaves. The diagonals of the boards and the horizontal arrangement of the fish give the scene stability, while the vertical forms of the bottle and vegetation add tension and depth. The color is organized through strong contrasts: deep greens and blacks surround reds, ochres, creamy whites, and bluish-gray highlights. The warm light does not fall evenly across the scene; it concentrates on the food, allowing some objects to blend into the half-light. The loose, colorful brushwork makes the surfaces shimmer, especially the scales, wood, and leaves, so that texture seems more important than precise outlines.

In this work by Konstantin Korovin, one can recognize a sensibility shaped by an intense perception of color, free brushwork, and an atmospheric treatment of light. These qualities transform an everyday grouping into a composition of almost theatrical intensity, in which each object contributes to a shared rhythm. It is worth noting how the fish, although they occupy the lower area, animate the entire structure: their reflections echo the light tones of the fruit and vessels, while the dark background visually separates them from the plant world. Thus, Fish is not merely a presentation of food; it turns its weight, sheen, and abundance into a compact, sensory pictorial experience.
