la-transfiguracion-raphael-sanzio
The Transfiguration

Raphael’s Transfiguration is the final work of the great Renaissance artist Raphael, commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de' Medici of the Medici banking dynasty.

The work was originally conceived as an altarpiece to be hung as the central panel of Narbonne Cathedral in France, and today it hangs in the Vatican Pinacoteca in Vatican City.

After Raphael’s death, the painting was never sent to France, and the Cardinal instead hung it on the high altar of the Church of the Blessed Amadeo in San Pietro in Montorio, Rome, in 1523.

However, in 1797 the painting was seized by French troops as part of Napoleon’s Italian campaign and later displayed in the Louvre.

At the most basic level, the painting can be seen as expressing a dichotomy: the redemptive force of Christ, symbolized by the purity and symmetry of the upper half of the painting, versus the failings of mankind, symbolized in the lower half by the dark, chaotic scenes.

This artistic composition is divided into two distinct parts. The Transfiguration is linked to successive episodes in the Gospel of Matthew. The upper part of the painting shows Christ elevated against glowing, billowing clouds, with the prophets Elijah and Moses at either side of him. In the lower part of the painting, the Apostles are shown unsuccessfully trying to free the demon-possessed boy from the demons. The upper part shows the transfigured Christ, who appears to be performing a miracle, healing the boy and freeing him from evil.

At the most obvious level, the painting can be read as a contrast between human frailty, represented in the lower half, and Christ’s redemptive power, in the upper half. There are two kneeling figures to the left of Christ: the martyrs Saint Agapetus and Saint Felicissimus, who were deacons arrested during the persecutions under Emperor Valerian.

The dimensions of The Transfiguration are 159 inches by 109 inches. Raphael preferred to paint on canvas, but this work was created using paintings and oil on wood as the chosen medium. In this painting, Raphael also showed clear signs of advanced Mannerism and Baroque-period techniques.

The stylized, contorted poses of the lower half-length figures point to Mannerism. The dramatic tension within these figures, and the liberal use of light and dark, or chiaroscuro contrast, reflect the Baroque period’s use of exaggerated movement to create drama, tension, exuberance, or illumination. The Transfiguration was ahead of its time, just as Raphael’s death came too soon.

It would be Raphael’s final painting, which he worked on until his death in April 1520.

The 1972–1976 cleaning of the painting revealed that only some of the lower-left figures were completed by assistants, while most of the work was painted by Raphael himself.

KUADROS ©, a famous painting on your wall.

Hand-made oil painting reproductions, with the quality of professional artists and the unmistakable mark of KUADROS ©.

Reproduction service of paintings with satisfaction guarantee.
